3. First morning in Kenya with the window intrusion alert going off

Before we came to Kenya we had heard a story of a thief that climbed up through the window and robbed money from a girl sleeping. For safety's sake we managed to prepare the room with different intrusion alarms yesterday, one of the magnetic larms was put up on the toilet window, and this morning at 5 am the larm started ringning.

Due to exhaustion from the long flight, we slept deeply, but after the larm went off we both woke up and looked at each other. The first thought was "THERE IS SOMEONE IN OUR ROOM". I (Carolina) stayed still on the bed while Philip ran to the larm. After awhile Philip came out and said "The tape of the larm stopper just fell off, there's no one here". After that we turned off all the window alarms just to get some few hours of good sleep, and everything went well until breakfast.

When we first arrived here in the "hotel", we had expected it to be a normal hotel where guests have their own rooms and where there is lobby and a restaurant. But it revealed itself to be an apartment where you share the kitchen and living room. Good thing was that you still have your own bedroom and toilet though. We were also informed that there is no restaurant here, but we could get a chef for ourselves if we wanted to.

For breakfast we would also get milk (high pasteurised), bread and 4 eggs. As we already woke up scared this morning, we slept longer this morning and became really hungry and thought "oh, maybe we can make some fried eggs with toast". We took all the 4 eggs and prepared for breakfast, but somehow something felt wrong, and we discussed among ourselves whether we would get more eggs for tomorrow or if these were for both days. As we started to eat a housekeeper came by, so we asked her if we would be provided with more eggs for tomorrow. Unfortunately for us, all food for our stay was prepared already on the first day, which means that we have to go to the grocery store in order to buy more food for tomorrow's breakfast 😏

What we have learned from this experience is that:

  1. Even though you are afraid of getting intrusion you should be more careful about the alarms you set up so that they don't go off unnecessarily early in the morning

  2. Don't eat everything provided at the first day, otherwise you might be without food if there is no grocery store around
